Buckwheat is not related to wheat in any way, and it is naturally free of gluten despite having a name that sounds similar to wheat. In point of fact, it is not even a type of grain but rather the seed of a fruit that is related to rhubarb. These tiny seeds are packed with lignans, one of which is called enterolactone, which is thought to protect against cardiovascular disease as well as hormone-related cancers like breast cancer.
